My Three Economic Predictions for Business 2016 - 2020 - My Crystal Ball

Published in Print Exclusively In the Windham Eagle, Windham Maine - January 15, 2016
Prediction One - Business to itself will flourish and grow over the next five years going from good to great.  The markets, which have been growing slowly over the last few years, will continue to grow except that they will be accelerating.  For the last five years we have been in a "replacement" market.  This market has become the norm for our society today.  We, in general, have not been buying products because we wanted them, but because we needed them - "our old one broke down".  In the next five years, business and market growth will accelerate as there is a pent up demand for the "I Wants" rather than "I Needs".  This points to good times.

Prediction Two - Financial instrument marketers will become more aggressive with the offering of more aggressive products.  Aggressive investment capital was stifled for several years for two reasons, the media told us of impending doom and the investment / tax rules were in flux - we like to invest where we know the rules.  Today, there is still huge pent up capital "waiting on the sidelines", but looking, for a place to flow.  In the next 5 years it will flow, possibly like it has never flowed in the past and probably not peaking for 20 years - yes, a twenty year boom.  This points to good times.

Prediction Three - Business and life are being redefined by our dreams and desires.  In the past, it has always been about security and consistency, which came with stress and vulnerability.  We will see more people stepping out (even if they are forced out) taking on the world satisfying their own entrepreneurial desires and wants setting their own destinies.  This will create jobs, wealth, and be a major part of our future and the economy.  This points to good times.

So where are all these opportunities - examples please?
  • Convenience Services
    • Landscaping
    • Food Prep and Delivery
    • Child Care
  • Financial Services
    • More people today are at least concerned about their future
  • Specialty Manufacturing.
    • Anything that can be made and shipped inexpensively and/or regonally  There are even boutique steel manufactures
Entrepreneurism will not only be the future, but the thing to be.

Firsts - The Obstacles When Starting a Business Venture - It's Just Like the Rest of Life

Published in Print Exclusively In the Windham Eagle, Windham Maine - January 22, 2016
Starting a business and becoming an entrepreneur (for the first time) is not about taking one step at a time, it's about getting beyond the firsts - maybe many first or even a series of first (purposly left singular).  The advice here is when you encounter a first, don't consider the task, consider it as a first - you have done 100s of firsts before.

First Anything - Just Do It
Think about what scares us in life - it's not the doing of something over and over, it's about doing those things for the first time.  But those firsts are more than scary, they also become our most revered and treasured memories. Think about it - Here are some examples of our firsts.
  • First Day of School - Elementary, JHS, HS, College
  • First Date, first Dance, first Girlfriend/Boyfriend, first Kiss, first Time
  • First Love, first Child
  • First Job, first Sales Call, first Rejection, first Sale
    • (Celebration of the first $Dollar$ pinned or framed on the wall)
  • First Business, first Hire, first Office

What's common here?  It's the word first. When we are afraid or scared, it's because it's your first time.  It is not about being insurmountable or impossible - it's just that we have never done it ir been there before.

Remember, your first time at anything has an unknown element to it - the unknowns, by their very nature, at a minimum, cause us hesitation - at the most, cause us fear.

Any venture, any opportunity, any challenge, and much of life is about doing, and getting beyond, your firsts.

We celebrate firsts. We reminisce of firsts.

"When was the last time you did something for the first time". ~ John C. Maxwell

Getting your SEO / Ranking Possibilities Right from Day One - SEO Tips Series

So you are creating a website and your objective is to get found.  The first thing you do is go to the network registrars and get your domain name (URL).  From the beginning (NOW) lets do it right.  Let's get your website's SEO off to the right start.

One of the first things the search engines look at is how long the website has been around.  It's the first piece of information in establishing and setting a level of trust.  Think of it in terms of job hunting - recruiters look for stable people who have been stable in their job history (funny oxymoron their).  The search engines have been programed the same way; has this website been around a while?  This one is tough to control if you are just out of school or a new website.

The next thing they look at is how long you (your URL) plans on being around.  Again, like job hunting, planned stability counts; like buying a house or any root planting scenarios.  In the case of your website URL, if you bought it for one year verses buying it for 7 years speaks loudly to your plans and confidence.  One Year domain are many times just flyers - not a lot of confidence in its existence thus not a lot of trust given by the search engines in return.  Buying for 7 years is like saying: “I want to be taken seriously.

SEO Tip Bug
Start out on the right foot with your website - for the extra $100, the search engines will take you a bit more seriously from the get-go.

This SEO tip will always be current.

The One Thing We Can Count On – Change – A Changing Market

The Internet and social media, have changed so much about our businesses and the market(s) we sell to, no matter which one(s) they are.  Adapting to the changes is the key to being able to survive in the future.  I have seen four business environment changes (ice age type changes) in my adult life (the 4th being the current one).  Some companies survived because they were adaptive through entrepreneurship (dictatorship) control; some companies survived by refining their business model, sometimes through brute force and several mistakes until they get it right; sometimes the survivor was just a new entrepreneurial opportunists.

The natural tendency of change is towards chaos. It is imperative to focus efforts towards the vision. It is almost impossible that any complex change can be managed with any rigid structure and then deliver successful results - for change to succeed, frequent adjustments must be made – a fluid plan (of course, there are several MBAs and consultants, who have never done, who will tell me differently).

The art of success and management is to create harmony, order and direction from chaos.

Where the Money Goes in Growing Small Businesses - Not to Easy Street

Small businesses have several phases  they go through in their early years much like a puppy or a child.  Each of these phases present different challenges and a different understanding of the numbers as they happen.  I am assuming a successful business startup here; success does not mean Easy Street, it simply means we have a product / service to sell that actually does sell at more than it costs and the business has cash flow.

The first feeling in a successful business startup is truly amazing (remember my definition of  "successful business startup") - the selling - the making of 'all the money' - the satisfaction of  'doing something good' and making the world a better place (seriously).  We feel 'in-the-money' as we are making money for each of the process elements of the product / service.  We feel the 'Magic' and want to do it more - the same feelings we get when we win at a casino (except you are betting on yourself) - you can taste winning.!.  Welcome, you are now an Entrepreneur.

Then the business grows - we have a product that people want and we can sell it.  The results though are not quite what we expect - twice the sales do not generate twice the personal income.  Additionally, we hit some stumbling blocks - all of a sudden we have employee issues, sick days, differences in throughput and a lower commitment than we ourselves have as owners - don't try to pretend this does not exist but also don't let this consume all your time and focus.  Sometimes we think we need to adjust prices to compensate for the additional costs - in reality there are no additional costs - those costs are simply not going to the entrepreneur anymore - you are not getting paid to clean the toilet anymore; someone else is.

Remember: Price has nothing to do with costs except
that it must be higher than cost to be in an ongoing business.

Assuming we can get beyond making a lower percentage on sales (maybe even less money), we then run into the next entrepreneurial stumbling block - hiring sales people.  They will never be as good as you and they are motivated by money, not your businesses success (normally).  This is the point where the entrepreneur must become more of a manager then entrepreneur.  This is difficult as the business is the entrepreneur's child.  Success here has more to do with building an asset and creating wealth than making more money.  What I tell business owners, that are lucky enough to reach this point, is that they will now feel forever broke as they continue to build the asset (the business).  This is one of the most difficult things to comprehend in small business.  They ask, "when I did one, I made $110K/year; now that I am doing 15 why am I only making $130K/year?"

What many entrepreneurs fails to realize is, if they stepped back from the business, they would still make $110K/year and they now have an asset generating cash flow and profits.

The Perfect Storm (Economically Speaking) a Year Later. The Worst (Best) is Yet To Come.

To understand this article you will need to read my article from a year ago with a similar name.  The Perfect Storm (Economically Speaking).  What's different, what's new, what have we learned and how far have we come and where are we going?

Capital, even though it is hemorrhaging slowly, is still pent-up. It needs to flow faster to the capital demand and will as it realizes it is missing opportunities (which it is).  What do the markets think?  Go to almost any trade show this year - They are bigger and the crowds are huge, much larger than just last year.  This is definitely a leading indicator of the state of our economy (Peter Lynch style).

Businesses are spending and hiring; the pace on both is going to increase.  Last year I felt like we were in a sling shot still pulling back (potential energy) - it's definitely moving forward now (kinetic energy).

As I have said before, a government that is indecisive, causes money to sit still - no one invests when the rules-of-the-game have not been defined.  Today, even though the rules still need some tuning, the capital and venture markets can no longer hold back - we are moving to flowing dollars.  What is even more amazing (IMHO), business activity is driving our government policies to make decisions (immigration reform).

So what else is coming?  High interest rates, high inflation, low unemployment, cheap non-exportable energy (venture $$$ abuzz), re-urbanization and localization.

Fun times ahead, I wish I were a young entrepreneur again; I envy my children and my grand children as there is a bright future for the young entrepreneur.

Oh, and I took the summer off from writing :) .

What the entrepreneur fails to realize is, if they stepped back from the business, they would still make $110K/year as they now have an asset generating cash flow and profits.
